Blanket coverage

It's probably not the first time it has happened, but Torontoist pokes a little fun at the two night-out Toronto giveaway mags eye and NOW for having the same cover subject this week. Not a major event like the Toronto film festival, mind you, but "Nuit blanche", whatever that is. As one reader noted, acidly, it is driven by who gets free tickets. Or it is a sign that there is a killer publicist out there.

"whatever that is?" nuit blanche is totally worthy of coverage in the weeklies. no doubt it's been PR carpet-bombed, but for toronto the stodgy it's a genuinely novel thing to do. naturally, we stole the whole idea from paris, but whatever, baby steps. either way, now and eye's editorial content is irrelevant - people only pick them up for the concert and movie listings...

Come on. It was a HUGE event, it was the first time it happened in Toronto and there were some brilliant things to see. It really deserved the coverage.

I'm still tired from getting in at 8:00am after my Gladstone breakfast.

OK. It WAS a big event (one that amazed even its organizers, I understand) and gave contemporary art and culture a boost it needed. The throwaway line was unnecessary and I apologize for it. The purpose of the item was, after all, to repeat what another blog said, not to denigrate the event. But those who stayed up late should understand that, outside of Queen Street and the core, the event had very little resonance or coverage. As hard as it is to believe, when I wrote that silly quip, I genuinely hadn't heard anything about it. Of course I don't live in Toronto...

in addition to the other comments, there were not tickets to be had. the entire event was free and included three neighbourhoods : Queen Street West. In and around U of T. Yorkville and museum town.

toront is the 8th city in the world (second in canada) to adopt an evening like this. it was unbelievable. if artists could only get this kind of coverage at their regular openings.

> Queen Street and the core

Which I believe is where Now and eye's readership lies, no?

We have one in Montreal, but it is very small in comparison.

Apropos of DB's point about the similarity in the cover, I vaguely remember a tempest in a teapot many years back about rules at eye and NOW and similarity of covers. There's a big no-no around having the same cover star, and I wish I could remember the cover in question. As a publicist you could get in deep do-do if you shop your diva du jour to both weeklies and nab the covers. Maybe someone else remembers the exact details.

I am so delighted to hear that nuit blanche was a success. I returned from a recent visit armed with the program and marketing materials.
