Magazines Canada/Zinio digital newsstand will be offering post-2005 back issues

Magazines Canada is offering participants in its digital newsstand (a partnership with Zinio) a limited opportunity to create replica editions of back issues of their titles. Some 120 magazines are signed onto the digital newsstand, which was launched two years ago, and 70 of them are live. Participating titles have until the end of September to provide a priority list of back issues from January 2005 on, which would could then be converted over about the next year.

I am curious to hear from publishers if this is working. What I hear is the service is plagued with bad service, minimal sales and the loss of magazine branding.

Further to the comment from Anon 1, I work with a publisher who is currently participating in this service who isn't very pleased. The comments below re: bad service, poor sales and loss of branding is bang-on.

Personally, I think the hype around the Zinio platform is overrated.

I work with a small local guy (Toronto) who does excellent work and provides top-notch customer service.

I also hear a rumour that Zinio is up for sale and is not profitable which may explain the bad service. Another rumour is their reader app may also be rejected with Apple's changing rules for the APP store.
